Program Description:

Excellence in Action Luncheon photoAlpha Behavioral Health Services (AlphaBHS) is a nonprofit social service agency that was founded in 1971 by volunteers from churches in Mid-City to provide counseling to homeless and substance abusing youth. Today AlphaBHS operates out of the North Park Resource Center and provides a wide range of behavioral health counseling services and financial literacy training, in English and Spanish, serving approximately 450 clients annually. Counseling fees are offered on a sliding scale fee; over 90% of clients pay on the lowest end of the scale, and no client is turned away due to inability to pay.

The greatest demands for counseling are anger management (21%), depression (21%) adolescent/youth (14%), and domestic violence (9%); however ABHS provides a wide variety of other behavioral health services including, substance abuse, marriage counseling, child sexual assault, chronic disease, and grief management. ABHS offers a five-week, ten-hour court- approved Child Welfare Services (CWS) certified anger management class and a ten-week, ten-hour court-approved CWS parenting class. In addition, ABHS provides contracted child counseling services to three schools: Nazareth Elementary, Sacred Heart Catholic School and the Chabat School.

Experience Provided: Students will be assigned individuals, families and children for therapy/counseling. They are expected to complete a psychosocial assessment, diagnosing when appropriate, and developing a treatment plan. There is the opportunity to co-facilitate various groups. The client population is low income, representing various cultures and religions.
Requirements: Some prior related experience is necessary, as well as ability to attend group supervision on Wednesdays. Spanish speaking trainees are encouraged to apply.
Our Alumni: AlphaBHS has been fortunate to have over 200 interns and/or trainee clinicians as part of our clinical team. Do we have your current information? Please keep in touch with us and let us know where you are at. Contact us at 619-285-9999 ext. 109 or e-mail scott@alphaBHS.org
